Variable Rate Nitrogen

Using remote sensors, the variation in crop canopy can be identified and managed using a variable rate of the application of nitrogen. By use of variable rate nitrogen you can optimise nitrogen rates and increase yield through better crop performance.

Nitrogen has the largest effect on crop growth yield and quality of any nutrient! You can increase nitrogen application to boost yields, but it only works to a point, after that it is a waste of finances and can increase the change of lodging and disease which will then reduce yield.

To measure the nitrogen requirement we assess the canopy of the growing crop using optical sensors on satellites. Variable rate nitrogen application plans are then produced to allow the farmer to make the most of nitrogen application. Variable rate nitrogen is used with great effect on winter wheat, winter oilseed rape and winter barley.
